We create a portfolio of services that help millions of people daily to explore and interact with the world in new ways. Our services include:

Google software, sites, and devices, such as Search, YouTube, and Google Home

Platforms like Chrome Browser and Android OS

Products integrated into third-party apps and sites, such as ads and embedded Google Maps

You can use our services in various ways to manage your privacy. For example, you can sign up for a Google account if you want to create and manage content, like emails and photos, or view more relevant search results. You can also use many Google services when you sign out or without creating an account in the first place, such as searching on Google or watching YouTube videos. You can also choose to browse the web privately, using Chrome Browser in 'Incognito Mode'. Through our services, you can adjust privacy settings to control what information we collect and how it is used.

To help explain things as clearly as possible we have added examples, explanatory videos, and definitions of key terms. If you have any questions about this Privacy Policy, you can contact us.

INFORMATION GOOGLE COLLECTED

We want you to distinguish between the types of information we collect while you use our services.

We collect information to provide better services for all of our users - from identifying basic matters, such as the language you speak to more complex matters, such as which ads you will find most useful, or the people you care about most on the Internet, or the videos you may like on YouTube. The information Google collects and how it uses it depends on how you use our services and how you manage privacy controls.

When you are not signed in to a Google Account, we store the information we collect using unique identifiers associated with the browser, app or device you are using. This helps us do, among other things, preserve language preferences in browsing sessions.

When you log in, we also collect and store information with your Google Account, where we treat this information as personal information.

Items that you create or provide to us

When you create a Google Account, you provide us with personal information, which includes your name and password. You can choose to add the phone number or payment information to your account. Even if you are not logged into a Google account, you can choose to provide us with information, such as an email address, to receive updates about our services.

We also collect content that you create, upload, or receive from others when using our services. This includes items such as email you write and receive, photos and videos that you save, documents and spreadsheets you create and comments you make on YouTube videos.

Information that we collect while you use our services

Your apps, browsers, and devices

We collect information about the apps, browsers, and devices that you use to access Google services, which helps us provide features like automatic product updates and dimming your screen when your battery runs low.

The information we collect includes unique identifiers, browser type and settings, device type and settings, operating system, mobile network information including carrier name, phone number, and app version number. We also collect information about the interaction of your apps, browsers, and devices with our services, including IP address, crash reports, system activity, date and time of your request, and the referring URL for that request.

We collect this information when the Google service on your device connects to our servers, for example when you install an app from the Play Store or when a service checks for automatic updates. If you use an Android device with Google apps, your device periodically contacts Google servers to provide information about your device and connect to our services. This information includes things like the type of device your device is, the name of your carrier, crash reports, and the apps you have installed.

Your activity

We collect information about your activity in our services. We use this information to do things like suggest a video on YouTube that you might like. The activity information we collect includes:

The terms you are looking for

The videos you watch

Views and interactions with content and ads

Voice information and audio settings when you use audio features

Purchase activity

People you communicate with or share content with

Activity on third-party websites and apps that use our services

Register the Chrome browser that you synced with your Google Account

If you use our services to make and receive calls or send and receive messages, we may collect phone history information such as your phone number, the number of the party calling you, the number of the party receiving the call, forwarding numbers, and timeFor calls and messages, their call history, call duration, routing information, and call types.

You can visit your Google account to find and manage activity information saved in your account.

Information about your geographic location

We collect information about your location when you use our services, which helps us provide features such as driving directions for your weekend getaway or showtimes for movies showing near you.

Your geographic location can be determined with varying degrees of accuracy by:

Global Positioning System

IP address

Sensor data from your device

Information about things near your device, such as Wi-Fi access points, cell towers, and Bluetooth-enabled devices

The types of location data we collect depend in part on your account and device settings. For example, you can enable or disable the geolocation service on your Android device using the device's "Settings" app. You can also turn on location history if you want to create a map of the places you travel to when you have the devices that use your account.

In some cases, Google also collects information about you from publicly accessible sources. For example, if your name appears in your local newspaper, Google may index and display that article for other people if they search for your name. We may also collect information about you from trusted partners, including marketing partners who provide us with information about potential customers for the business services we provide, and security partners who provide us with information to protect us from abuse. We may also receive information from advertisers to provide advertising and search services on their behalf.

We use various technologies to collect and store information, including cookies, pixel tags and local storage, such as browser web storage or application data caches, databases, and server logs.

Why Google collects data

We use the data to create better services

We use the information we collect from all of our services for the following purposes:

Offer our services

We use your information to provide our services, such as processing the terms you search for to produce results or to help you share content by suggesting recipients from your contacts.

Maintain and improve our services

We also use your information to ensure that our services are working as intended, such as tracking outages and troubleshooting issues that you report to us. We use your information to make improvements to our services. For example, identifying more frequently misspelled search elements helps us improve the spelling features used across our services.

Developing new services

We use the information we collect on existing services to help us develop new services. For example, understanding how people organize their photos in Picasa, Google's first photo app, helped us design and launch the Google Photos app.

Provide personalized services, including content and ads

We use the information we collect to customize our services for you, including providing recommendations, personalized content and personalized search results. For example, Security Checkup provides security advice that matches how you use Google products. Google Play uses information such as apps that you previously installed and videos that you watched on YouTube to suggest new apps that you may like.

Depending on your settings, we may show you personalized ads based on your interests. For example, if you search for "mountain bikes," you may see an ad for sports equipment when you browse a site that displays Google ads. You can control what information we use to show you ads by going to your ad settings.

We do not show you personalized ads based on sensitive categories, such as race, religion, sexual orientation or health.

We do not share personally identifiable information, such as your name or email address, with advertisers unless you ask us to do so. For example, if you see an advertisement for a flower shop near you and you choose the "click to call" button, we will collect your call details and give your phone number to the flower shop.

Performance Measurement

We use the data for analytics and measurement to understand how our services are used. For example, we analyze data about your visits to our sites to do things like improve product design. We also use data about the ads you interact with to help advertisers understand the performance of their ad campaigns. We use several tools to do this, such as Google Analytics. When you visit sites that use "Google Analytics", the Google customer and "Google Analytics" may link information about your activity from that site to your activity from other sites that use our advertising services.

Communicate with you

We use the information we collect, such as your email address, to interact directly with you. For example, we may send you a notification if we discover suspicious activity, such as trying to sign in to your Google Account from an unusual location. Or we may inform you about future changes or improvements that we make to our services. If you contact Google, we will keep a record of your request to help you solve any problems you may encounter.

Protect Google, our users, and the public

We use the information to help us improve the security and reliability of our services. This includes detecting and responding to fraud, abuse, security risks, and technical issues that may harm Google, our users, or the public.

We use various technologies to process your information for these purposes. We use automated systems that analyze your content to provide you with features, such as personalized search results, personalized ads, or other features tailored to how you use our services. We analyze your content to help usControls your privacy

You have choices about the information we collect and how we use it

This section explains the main controls for managing your privacy across our services. You can also visit the Manage Privacy Settings section, which provides you with an opportunity to review and adjust important privacy settings. In addition to these tools, we also provide you with specific privacy settings in our products, where you can learn more information in our Product Privacy Guide.
